Forced marriages(Nigeria)

The Nigerian society is very unique in her approach to Marriage/Wedding issues as opposed to the approach of better developed nations of the world. It is safe to say that, most women in Nigeria would stay unmarried till death if they had their way. The ‘society’ frowns at and views an unmarried lady as some kind of taboo.
The men are not left out in this imbroglio. The society dictates and everyone seems to want to please it and this same society deserts them in difficult times. Marriage in the “Nigerian” context is a legally recognized relationship, established by a civil or religious ceremony, between a man and a woman who intend to live together as sexual and domestic partners.
In the definition above, compatibility is not taken into cognizance. This is the order of the day in our nation. A spinster in her 30’s is abhorred by the society. As a matter of fact, she is seen as a failure. In a bid to satisfy the society, she jumps into the arms of a wrong man. The results of such marriages abound.
A lot of wives have been abused and even killed in their marital homes as a result of falling into a wrong marriage. Many marriages have collapsed as fast as they were tied because they were never meant to be in the first place. Marriages should be allowed to happen naturally and not forcefully.
It is common knowledge that the women are more affected by this malaise in Nigeria but it is hi time the scourge ended.
